Instalation

The 2 images that I would have put together in an instalation would be "Kiss of Victory" by Sir Alfred Gilbert and "The Death of St. John" by Damien Hirst.

"Kiss of Victory" is a marble sculpture of a fallen soldier and an angel. The soldier is at the moment of death and it being kissed by the angel.

"The Death of St John" is a piece that is in a glass case. It contains candles, a skull, many glass bottles, and a rosary, among other things.

I would like to put these two pieces together because, they both represent death, however both in very different ways. "The Death of St John" gives the impression that death is frightening and grotesque, while "Kiss of Victory" gives the impression that death is something that can be honorable and even something a person may look forward too. I think that these too pieces together would give off mixed feelings. What you felt would depend on the piece you decided to focas on.

I think that I would display them in a room with plain white walls, medium sized, with a spot light coming from the ceiling pointing at them, and maybe one from the floor also. They would be side by side, with "Kiss of Victory" on the left.

  1. Hey Lucy! I was also drawn to "The Death of St. John" and was (still kinda am) considering using it. I like your take on different interpretations of death, and how many views there are on what comes after. That's a subject that always promotes dialogue and questions. Very intriguing...

  2. I agree - interesting choices, and I like how their juxtaposition really highlights the different bleak and romantic views. I wonder if you could expand a little on how you might display them together - are they next to each other, facing each other, in a large room, a small room? For some reason I can imagine them looking great in a room with the Christian Boltanski installation, which also feels like a kind of meditation on death:

  5. Hey Lucy! I love your idea of putting two ideas of death together. It kind of forces you to think how you view death as a person. Is it something to look foward to? or is it scarey?

  7. sorry, here's the spell checked version: Great idea of juxtaposing death in these two pieces. It also brings up the difference of each era's interpretation of death. The smooth flowing arc and romantic feel of the angel statue contrasted with the harsh box full of scientific jars.
